What is the Lightning Network?
The Lightning Network is a Layer-2 payment protocol on top of Bitcoin that enables fast, low-cost, peer-to-peer transactions. It uses payment-channel state updates to keep most transactions off-chain, settling only the final balance on the Bitcoin base chain. A Lightning node is the software that participates in this network — opening channels, routing payments, and (optionally) serving as a routing hub for others.
Where to start
If you’ve never set one up: RaspiBlitz or Umbrel get you from zero to a running node in a day. For a deeper understanding of how channels, liquidity, and routing actually work, start with Jameson Lopp’s liquidity guide and the LND installation docs.
If you’re choosing between implementations: LND (Lightning Network Daemon, Go) and Core Lightning (CLN) are the two main ones. CLN is plugin-driven and lighter; LND is more GUI-friendly and has more third-party tooling.
This site is a curated index of node-operator resources — not a tutorial itself. It’s organized by the workflow you’ll actually follow: install → secure → fund channels → manage liquidity → monitor → scale.
